In 2016 it was 8 men, and by 2017 5 men almost own the same wealth as the 3.6 Billion people who make up the poorest half of humanity. Progressives need to focus on building power, power that only comes from the inextricable connection of leadership, organization & movement.

What We Do

Leadership

The progressive movement has a talent problem.  We don’t have enough leaders and organizers capable of operating at a very high level.  We train a select, diverse group of progressive leaders and organizers using workshops as well as three kinds of coaching – performance, organizational, and personal.

Organization

Strong, nimble, scarily powerful organizations are the key to shifting power back to average Americans from the Venal .1% who now run the country. We work with top leadership teams of progressive organizations to help make their organizations more strategic, powerful, and connected.

Movement

Leaders from across the progressive movement need to think and act together, not just everyone doing what they know how to do. We work with movement leaders toward building a strategic progressive movement capable of winning and holding onto the wins.

Winning!

It is abundantly clear that our side has enough power to produce a moment, or even a few moments, but not enough power to produce an organization-undergirded movement that can sustain change. Mainly we have to quit what we’re doing. What we’re doing now guarantees that we will continue to lose. Instead, we have to raise more money, recruit and train more leaders and organizers, and build big, scary, strategically aligned organizations with powerful strategic partnerships focused on winning, not just participation, resistance, or protest.

Excerpts from the upcoming book

Winning!

Our biggest competitive advantage going forward is the development of progressive leaders who can build powerful organizations in which talent recruitment and development is central to their mission.  Right now the progressive talent strategy is like a Major League manager going into the stands and asking “can any of you pitch?” … We throw people into positions with little training or coaching and wonder why don’t succeed.

Most people are not and do not want to be a public person … So if you want to join the minority of people who have decided to become a public person, recognize that you are not normal … Public people are formed.  They are constantly crafting and re-crafting themselves for the role or roles they want to play.

Sustained winning should be the goal.  Progressive organizations should be permanent, relentless forces for change, not momentary catalysts of contract time mobilizers.

Transformational change = leadership + organization + movement.
Leadership requires a vision of a different reality and the ability to move people to create it … What distinguishes great leaders from ordinary ones is their ability to act boldly in the midst of their uncertainty. Organization, of either people or money, is how we get and exercise power. Movement is all of us together, something bigger than us and bigger than our organizations.
